We've found a flat! I don't want to jinx it by saying too much though, so more later.

I was fascinated, though, by the pot-stirrers of fear otherwise known as rental agents. When I stopped by the office to drop off our forms (and shell out a ludicrous £160 for "processing") they were all sat in a long intimidating row. You're completely ignored at first and have to stand there like an idiot until someone finally decides to speak to you.

Also, snippet of a conversation:

"5 pm viewing, sure. You're booked in. But are you sure you don't want to go earlier? The 4 o'clock might decide to take it and you don't want them to get in there ahead of you..."

And so forth repeated to the 3 pm vs. 2 pm, stirring up insecurity and panic bidding to fill those flats asap.

They did the same thing to us, encouraging me to slap the fee onto plastic the second we'd agreed over the phone "to hold the property" (hang on, didn't they just accept our offer?) and suggesting I come in at 8:30 AM sharp to sign the papers "just in case". And you know what? No one else had put in an offer anyhow. Not that we didn't want to sort things quickly, but why the scare tactics?

Anyhow, at least we know to take it all with a grain of salt next time...
